While waiting, I want to the canteen with a dizzy head (The end result of spinning and even more spinning) and bought something light to eat. There, I realised the power of a 'universal language'-smiling lightly.
I smiled at an old man cleaning the dishes around my vicinity and from a simple,"吃完了吗？" It led into a 20 minute filled conversation with jokes, philosophy,advice and sage-like teachings. In the middle, an older worker from Sri Lanka joined in the fun and teasing as I laughed my heart out.
And here's the Social Studies 'Rise of the Singles'. The (Uncle or Ah 公)'s 3 grown children are still single and living with him although they are well educated, he has yet to have grandchildren. So he cannot 'kick the bucket yet as he must live to see them' added the older Sri Lankan worker as I agreed with him.
Also, the adage, 不听老人言，吃亏在眼前 is at play here. I admired his attitude towards life most because:
Me: Uncle, 你在这里工作不辛苦吗？
Uncle: 辛苦是辛苦啦。不过，我不要想有多辛苦就行了。
Me: (Nods head)
On wise and sage-like religion:
Uncle: 佛教最注重的是孝道。现在很少看到年轻人这么做了。
Me: Uncle, 我不是佛教。
Uncle: 不是说你一定要是一个佛教的人才孝顺。佛教的道理其实每个人都能用。
